Breast Reconstruction

Reconstructive surgery of the breast following mastectomy may involve the use of implants and/or transfer of skin, fat and muscle from other parts of the body.  Usually, more than one operation is required.  Some patients are candidates for the use of lower abdominal skin and fat to reconstruct the breast and this can result in improvement of the contour of the lower abdomen.  Surgery of the remaining breast is often indicated to improve the symmetry of the reconstructed breast to the remaining breast.  Insurance coverage for breast reconstruction is mandated by federal law.
